Just 28 miles north of Plymouth on (now)
Historic Highway 49 is the small town of Coloma. Here, in 1848, Gold was
discovered in the tailrace of John Sutter's lumber mill on the banks of the
American River. James Marshall reached down and plucked a nugget of gold
from the water which ultimately released a deluge of prospectors, giving name to
the California Gold Rush of 1849. As they say, the rest is history!

Open Tuesday 10-4, Wednesday through Sunday. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
Admission by donation. Tours of Kennedy Mine scale model, Saturday & Sunday from
11-3 on the hour, $1, under 8 years old free. Large tour groups by reservation.

Chew
Kee Store
On Fiddletown Road in Fiddletown. Chinese rammed earth building established as
herb shop during the Gold Rush. The only remnant of the once-thriving Fiddletown
Chinese Community. Maintained by Fiddletown Preservation Society, P.O. Box 53,
Fiddletown 95629. Open Saturdays only, April through October, noon-4 p.m.; or by

wagons, farm implements, winemaking tools, furniture and antiques from days gone

Shenandoah Valley
Amador County is now home to over 30
wineries. Many are situated on scenic back roads in some of the most
picturesque rural terrain in California. Most Amador wineries are small
family operations.
You are likely to meet the owner and
unpretentious hospitality is the norm. While Amador County is justly famous
for its Zinfandel wines, new Mediterranean varieties native to Italy and
Southern France are beginning to make a fine showing and are becoming common
in area tasting rooms.

Kennedy Gold Mine
The historic Kennedy Gold Mine is in Jackson. Producing over $34.2
million in gold, the Kennedy Mine was one of the richest gold mines in the
world. From mid-March through October, weekends only, you can tour the

Sutter
Gold Mine
Sutter Gold Mine is located between Sutter Creek and Amador City. This is a
Gold Mine is filled with history and interesting artifacts. Experience a
comprehensive look into the gold mining process and its historical
progression from gold panning and hydraulic mining to hard rock techniques.
